Students turn Rubik’s cubes into art

Maize High School's Rubik’s Cube Club has been putting their problem-solving skills and creativity to work by designing colorful mosaics using the club’s collection of 144 Rubik’s cubes.

Creating a cube mosaic takes planning and teamwork. Each cube face contains nine squares, and with 144 cubes available, students can design images using up to 1,296 pixels. Designs must also be created using only the six colors found on a standard Rubik’s Cube—red, blue, green, yellow, orange, and white—making the process both a creative and strategic challenge.

The club completed two mosaics during the third term. The first design, created by student Alec Aubuchon with help from fellow club members, featured an eagle inside a heart. The piece was displayed in the commons during Parent-Teacher Conferences as a way to show the club’s love for the Maize Eagles and their passion for creating with cubes.

A second mosaic, designed by Max Carlo, celebrates St. Patrick’s Day. The festive design was completed in time to be displayed during the week leading up to Spring Break. Students selected the theme knowing that Maize High School Principal Dr. Chris Botts is a big fan of the holiday.

The Rubik’s Cube Club meets weekly during FLEX on Friday afternoons. During meetings, students design new mosaic ideas and practice solving cubes of various shapes and sizes.

The club is always looking to expand its collection. If you have old Rubik’s cubes that are no longer being used, the group would gladly accept donations to help create larger mosaics and replace cubes that have worn out. Anyone interested in donating cubes can contact Leigh Johnson at lajohnson@usd266.com
